Bachelor of Arts
Bachelor of Arts (BA) students can include Sustainability in their degree in a variety of ways.
Environment, Sustainability & Society (ESS) can be a central focus of a BA degree in a听Double Major or Combined Honours听degree. Students study ESS along with any subject from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science or the Faculty of Science. These degree programs are 120 credit hours, meaning that they typically take 4 years to complete, same as a Single Major or Concentrated Honours degree.听
Students who may want to pursue graduate studies should consider a Combined Honours degree, which typically requires an Honours Thesis (supervised independent research project) in one of the two chosen subjects, usually in fourth year. Meet with your Academic Advisors about subject-specific course and GPA requirements before or during third year!
Work-integrated learning options
BA students with ESS as a Major or Honours subject may apply for听Sustainability Work-Integrated Learning, with Sustainability Co-op (3 paid work terms) or Sustainability Work Experience Program (1 paid work term). This is the only co-op program available to BA students at Dal! Gain Sustainability-related work experience as an听undergrad听and hit the ground running when you graduate!听Learn more
Minor options
For students who want to fit Sustainability into their degree without choosing it as a Major or Honours, ESS can also complement any 120 credit-hour BA degree as a听Minor.听Learn more about Minor options
BA students may also complete a 90-credit-hour (鈥3-year鈥) degree with ESS as a Minor.听
Students pursuing the concurrent BEng/BA degree may complete the ESS Minor.听For more information about this听option, reach out to an听Academic听Advisor听from either the College of Sustainability or the Faculty of Engineering!
Certificate options
Students can also integrate Sustainability into a BA degree with one or more听Certificates:
The Certificate in ESS; the Certificate in Communicating Sustainability; or the Certificate in Food, Agriculture and Sustainability can be obtained by completing specific courses, which may also satisfy other degree and program requirements.听Learn more about these certificates
The RBC Sustainability Leadership Certificate can be obtained by completing two action projects and three in-person modules typically scheduled at the College of Sustainability in October,听January听and March.听Learn more about the RBC Sustainability Leadership Certificate
