This certificate is open to currently registered È«¹ú̽»¨ and King's students in all faculties.

The Certificate in Jewish Studies offers students enrolled in any undergraduate degree program at È«¹ú̽»¨ or the University of King’s College an opportunity to pursue an area of specialization in Jewish cultures, history, texts, and languages from ancient to contemporary contexts from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective.

Jewish Studies is a well-established multidisciplinary academic area. Scholars of Jewish Studies come from diverse fields and use methods and approaches from history, linguistics and philology, literary studies, critical theory, art history, philosophy, sociology and anthropology, political science, and other disciplines to study Jewish cultures and histories.

The Certificate will allow students to pursue a specialization in the cultures, history, and texts of Jews and Judaism in a comparative context, while complementing and enriching their degree program(s) with interdisciplinary perspectives.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who complete the Certificate in Jewish Studies will be able to:

1. Describe the historical development of Judaism, Jewish communities, and Jewish identity over time
2. Discuss the global and local diversity of Judaism and Jewish communities on matters of culture, religion, politics, race and ethnicity, identity, and other aspects
3. Analyze the relations and interactions between Jewish and other communities historically and today
4. Discuss the study of Jews and Judaism from multiple disciplinary perspectives
5. Identify and explain the development and significance of key sources and/or languages central to Judaism and Jewish communities historically and today
6. Explain how Jewish communities contribute to diversity locally and globally, and demonstrate a commitment to support diversity initiatives and cross-cultural understanding

Requirements:

This certificate is a 15-credit-hour certificate. Students must take at least one of two core classes (3 credit hours):

RELS2001: Judaism (will be offered every year or every other year)
OR
RELS1002: Judaism, Christianity, Islam – Abrahamic Religions (will be offered every year or every other year)

Exceptions to this requirement may be granted by prior written approval of the coordinator for students who

1. are unable to take either class before graduating because of scheduling conflicts with courses required for their degrees, AND
2. can demonstrate equivalent knowledge through a combination of other academic course work.

Elective Requirements:

Choose an additional 12 credit hours of elective courses from the following list. If students take both RELS1002 and RELS2001, one of those courses may be used as an elective toward these 12 credit hours. At least two 3-credit-hour courses must be taken at the 3000 level or higher to ensure depth of learning.
